The 1957 Gaming Guide is a special publication to me as it shows my father, Henry Sylvester, sitting at the bar in the Westerner Club. My father was a partner in the club and his job was to manage the graveyard shift from 11:00PM to 7:00 AM. This was not an easy task, as many of the high rollers would come to gamble in the wee hours of the morning when they could be free of the normal hustle bustle of the casino to concentrate on their business and needed a special type of coddling from the casino manager. This task was undertaken by my father. As a young boy in Vegas (I was 7) eager to play and watch the new magic box, television, my mother had to make sure that my brother and I were quiet so my dad could sleep during the day after he returned home from the night shift.
